Automatic imaging tool for anti-scatter X-ray grids

GridTester_cln.jpgOur customer (a leading developer and
producer of high tech electronics and
medical equipment in the Eindhoven
region) developed an anti-scatter grid that
is produced for selective transmission of
electromagnetic radiation. The grid is
produced using selective laser sintering.
More details about this patented grid can
be found here.

EBtech designed and built an automatic
imaging tool that qualifies the grids that
are produced.

As shown in the image below, visible light
cannot be used for imaging because diffraction
would course blurry images that would result
in inaccurate measurements if processed by
vision software. For this reason an X-ray
source is used instead.

The main components of the system are:

  • X-ray source
  • X-ray camera
  • Photo detector with scintillator for alignment
  • High accuracy X-Y-positioning system for the X-ray source
  • Positioning system for the photo detector and the X-ray camera
  • Adaptable focal distance
  • Frame with lead shielding that absorbs stray X-ray
  • Software.
For the perfect result, X-ray is used in stead of visible light as shown in the next image. This image is processed by vision software that accurately measures all relevant dimensions of the grid.
